Success at the Zapcat Celtic Cup

Aberdeen Surf Life Saving Club member Paul Sargent competed in the first Zapcat Celtic Cup with our sponsor, Marin Subsea’s team Scottish Highlanders – Guardian of Scotland. Paul’s team managed a very respectable 13th despite this being his first competition.

Marin Subsea’s main team, Marin Subsea/ Delta Jet were flying from the word go and looked like an unstoppable team as they carried on their lead in the Celtic Cup. From the first turn they took the lead from Westgate and BS Marinesport as the pack closed in. Marin Subsea, knowing they had the boat speed opted for the shorter course to build their lead, which they maintained to take the top spot on the podium.

Marine Conservation Society Beach Clean-up

Andrew Burns, Shona Brown, Mark Bragg and Chris Leach from Aberdeen Surf Life Saving club participated in the Marine Conservation Society’s Beachwatch Big Weekend. The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has organized the Beachwatch Big Weekend, a nation-wide beach clean-up and litter survey every year since 1993. The Beachwatch Big Weekend takes place once every year, always on the third weekend of September to coincide with the International Coastal Clean (ICC) up.

Thousands of volunteers from around the UK spend just a few hours of the MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend helping to clean up and survey our coastline.

MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend is the flagship event of the Adopt-a-Beach project. Adopt-a-Beach uses exactly the same method of beach cleaning and surveying as Beachwatch Big Weekend, but the events take place seasonally 4 times a year (The majority of Adopt-a-Beach organises carry out their Autumn survey over the MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend).

“It’s a bit like off road stock car racing in kayaks. The race was 18 miles long, has 13 big wiers, several rapids and had 1020 competitors. We managed to stay dryish on 4 of the wiers, the rest we swam on, ripped 2 big holes in the boat, sank, repaired it with sticky insulation tape and limped into the finish - Brilliant – can’t wait till next year. ”

Integrate Paddling Training Night

Local kayak club Integrate Paddling held a beginners training session outside the ASLSC club hut on Thursday. The session covered everything from basic forward propulsion, paddling technique, maneuvering to getting in and out of you kayak whilst looking cool.

Fun was had by all despite the surf getting in the way. In fact one or two people had so much fun they forgot they where in the North Sea.

Integrate Paddling is a young, lively kayak club that offers sea kayaking and river racing opportunities and equipment to anyone interested and of any ability.

…and I would paddle 750 miles, and I would 750 more…

Ok, it doesn’t quite fit the song but we say hat’s off to club member Mark Bragg, who has started an epic journey attempting to kayak around Scotland. Personally, to the the harbour and back is enough for me! Check out his progress below. If anyone is free when he passes Aberdeen, it would be great to give him an escort!

Solstice Club Competition

The first ever Sciottish Solstace Surf Life Saving Competition has been and gone; I have a feeling it won’t be the last one. Well done to all those that competed especially Steve & Sian, the overall Men’s and Women’s Champions. Also mention should go to Dan and Tom, the officail adjudicators on the day.

The day was finished off nicely with a curry in town, which unseeded and relatively unknown outsider, Daniel Ten-Bellies Harvey won in a tense 7 plates to 6 final against the favourite, Chris It-ain’t-half-hot-mum Leach.

Club gets a Zappcat

The club has just taken possession of a Zapcat catamaran rigid inflatable Boat (RIB) kindly donated by the Marin/Delta Jet racing team. The Zapcat will complement the club’s Arancia Inshore Rescue Boat and will be trialled by the club over the next twelve months to assess its suitability for use as surf rescue equipment in the UK. Many thanks to George and his team; we look forward to working with you over the coming year.

There was a a great turn out for the Lions Club New Year’s Day Swim and it was covered by several local and national newspapers. This year the ASLSC offered our services to patrol the “bathing area” as part of the Lions Club risk mitigation measures. I have to admit it was nice to be on patrol will people in the water for a change. Many thanks to Mark for helping out.
